December 2012 newsletter

Your Oregon-Idaho chapter has been active. Click here to download the newsletter. If you were not able to be with us in Wilsonville in October, you can see the results from that meeting. You can also find out what MFSA is doing globally and in the western US.

The UMC is a global church – does it matter?

Why should we as justice seekers be interested in the global nature and structure of the United Methodist Church? It’s mainly an issue of justice, of practicing what we preach. All churches and annual conferences are not created equal. Is it time to change that? The discussion also has something to do with understanding and potentially changing the nature of voting majorities at General Conference sessions.

The document here is the report of a Study Committee appointed at the direction of the 2008 GC.  The committee held listening sessions all over the world, then they compiled what they heard and made recommendations to the 2012 GC. Unfortunately, very little of it was even considered in Tampa. The Western Jurisdiction is trying to get the rest of the church to move forward rather than waiting until 2016.

Our chapter is initiating a study of the committee’s report document. You can read it now, or you can download it and read it in pieces.┬áComments are welcome at any time. We will also be discussing the report at future meetings and will be specifically asking for comments when we do.
